Giuseppe de Marchi

Giuseppe De Marchi, photographer and naturalist, lives - we can say - in harmony with the islands, especially with the island of Dahret, whom he described as "the most beautiful among the beautiful". From this experience came in 2004, the photo exhibition "Dahlak - Pearls Coral Red Sea" on display in Milan, Paris, Rome and Asmara, whose catalogue is currently the best popular presentation on Dahlak written in Italian language. The text and photos on this site, with the kind permission of the author, are taken from this volume.

Giorgio Chiozzi, ornithologist at the Museum of Natural History in Milan, and Giuseppe De Marchi have discovered the existence in the islands of more than two dozen colonies of Drom, a tiny seabird that nests in very few known sites around the Arabian Peninsula. With this discovery, now the Dahlak archipelago and, in general, the Eritrean islands are known as the place where the bird nests with the highest density in the world. In July 2009, along with Dawit Semere, they released "Wings over the Red Sea: The Birds of the Eritrean islands”, monographic of the magazine “Natura”, that shows, with a wealth of photos and information, all species of birds recorded so far on about 350 Eritrean islands: a splendid job!

Giuseppe De Marchi, Guido Traverso and Giampaolo Montesanto published an interesting and richly illustrated volume on the city of Massawa, its history and its people, I still have not had the pleasure to see, but certainly it will be unique.
